Have you ever heard the word ‘Disaster’? When we hear the word ‘disaster’, we think of earthquakes, floods, landslides, or other situations caused by natural phenomena. That’s not wrong… The word ‘disaster’ itself, according to Wikipedia, is often associated with something bad. Etimologically, the word can be broken down to ‘dis’, which means ‘something unfavorable’, and ‘astro’, which refers to a star. ‘Dis-astro’, then means ‘an event precipitated by the stars’. *Source: http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bencana.
Youth Path 1208: School of Life is a reflection of Indonesian youth on International Youth Day, August 12, 2009.
Presently, approximately 40 million Indonesian young people do not have space in which to express their opinions and perspectives in their own communities. The energy, idealism and creativity of young people are often overlooked in formulating a social model for the continuity and development of the community. In five years, some of them will undertake new responsibilities as adults and begin to work, get married and start their own families.
With the awareness of this situation and various findings about the conditions of youth, Kampung Halaman, with support from Ford Foundation, designed this activity.
There is a new activity in Tembi village in which the youth community joins with Kobate (Komunitas Belajar dan Bermain Anak Tembi, Tembi’s Children’s Learning and Playing Community). Ever since last April, they have gathered in one of the houses in their village. What are they doing? It appears that they are rehearsing for a wayang performance. There are about 11 young people rehearsing, under the coordination of Humam, the Kobate coordinator.
This activity is a continuation of the video community that they created with Kampung Halaman in September 2008. The video, entitled “Wayangku Mencari Soulmate” (“My Wayang Searches for its Soulmate”, 22 minutes), tells about the experience of Tembi youth with wayang. In the video, they express their feelings about wayang, in which many of them do not like it for various reasons. Read about this in “Anak Muda dan Seni Tradisional” (“Young People and the Traditional Arts”), September 18, 2008.
